Government Support: Am I eligible for the £100 Household Energy Payment?

What is the £100 Household Energy Payment?

The government has announced a one-off £100 Household Energy Payment to help eligible households in England with rising energy costs.

The payment will be administered by local councils and is expected to start from January 2027.

The payment is made directly to eligible households. It is not a discount on your Homebox bills.

Am I eligible for the £100 energy payment?

You may qualify if:

  • You live in England.
  • Your property is in Council Tax band A, B, C or D.
  • The property is your main home.
  • You are legally responsible for paying Council Tax at that property.

The government has confirmed that most households exempt from Council Tax will also be included, although further eligibility rules are still being finalised.

What if I rent my property?

Renters may qualify if they meet the eligibility requirements.

If your Council Tax is included in your rent or bills package, check who is legally responsible for paying Council Tax. Households where the resident is not liable for Council Tax are generally excluded.

How do I check my Council Tax band?

You can check your property's Council Tax band using the official government website:

Check your Council Tax band

You will need your property address to find the correct band.

How do I claim the £100 Household Energy Payment?

The payment will be managed by your local council, not Homebox or your energy supplier.

If you pay Council Tax by Direct Debit:

If you qualify and pay Council Tax by Direct Debit, you should receive the £100 payment automatically into your bank account. You do not need to apply.

If you do not pay Council Tax by Direct Debit:

Your local council will invite you to apply and provide instructions on how to receive the payment.

Applications are not open yet, and councils are waiting for further government guidance on the arrangements.

You do not need to contact Homebox or your energy supplier to claim this payment.

When will I receive my £100 payment?

The government expects payments to start from January 2027.

However, this does not mean every eligible household will receive their payment in January. Your local council will confirm its payment arrangements.

Will the £100 be deducted from my Homebox bills?

No. The £100 Household Energy Payment is a separate government payment administered by local councils.

It will not automatically reduce your Homebox monthly payments or your energy bills.

What if I am not eligible for the £100 payment?

You may still be able to receive other financial support.

The government has announced an additional £100 million for local councils to help households struggling with energy costs, including some households outside Council Tax bands A–D.

Your local council will decide who qualifies for this additional support and how to apply.

You may also qualify for the separate £150 Warm Home Discount, depending on your circumstances.

How can I avoid energy payment scams?

Be careful of unexpected calls, emails or text messages asking you to claim the £100 payment.

The government has confirmed that only your local council should contact you about claiming the payment.

Never share your personal or banking information unless you are certain the request is genuine. If you are unsure, contact your council directly using its official website.
