Where to find your meter reading
Your meter is usually located in a cupboard, hallway, or basement. Depending on whether you have an electricity or gas meter, the location and the type of reading will vary slightly. Here’s how you can find your reading for each type of meter:
- Electricity meter:
If you have a digital electricity meter, you’ll typically see a row of numbers on the display. The reading will often be on the far left, and it might have a "kWh" label beside it, indicating kilowatt-hours. If you have an older, dial-type meter, you’ll see a series of dials. You’ll need to record the numbers on the dials from left to right and round down to the nearest digit.
👉 Tip: For digital meters, make sure you're reading the ‘usage’ number and not any other display (such as the tariff rate or maximum demand).
- Gas meter:
For gas meters, you will usually see a series of numbers on the display. Gas meters may have either a digital display or a dial system.
- For a digital gas meter, the reading will be a simple string of numbers with no decimal points, and it will be displayed on the screen.
- For a dial gas meter, you’ll need to read the numbers from left to right, just like an older electricity meter.
👉 Tip: If your gas meter includes a red dial or number, don’t include this in your reading – it’s usually for the dial reading to identify the meter model and is not relevant to your energy use.
