Common Council Tax Issues

Council Tax payments can sometimes be delayed or adjusted, especially when councils take longer to issue your initial bill. Understanding how Council Tax billing works, including why payments may change and when new bills are sent, can help you stay on top of your account.

Local councils are responsible for sending out Council Tax bills each year. These usually arrive around March or April, marking the start of the new Council Tax year, which runs from April to March.

If you receive your bill in the post, please upload a copy to your Homebox account as soon as possible. This ensures your records are correct and that your payments are set up properly.

Sometimes, councils take longer than usual to issue your initial bill. When this happens, your first payment may be adjusted once your bill arrives to make sure your total payments for the year stay accurate.

Tip: It’s common for councils to apply a small annual increase, usually around 4%, when they issue new bills each March. This helps fund local services and will be reflected in your updated bill.

Note: If your bill is delayed, don’t worry — this won’t affect your account in the long term. Once uploaded, Homebox will help ensure your payments are aligned with your official Council Tax statement.
