What are council tax exemptions?
Council tax exemptions mean you may not have to pay council tax if you meet certain criteria or circumstances.
An exemption means you do not have to pay any council tax on a property (or part of it) because of certain conditions.
For example, you may qualify for a council tax exemption if:
-
The property is unoccupied because the person who lived there has moved into a hospital or a care home.
- Someone you live with is registered disabled
Note: Even if you don’t qualify for a full exemption, you might be eligible for a discount instead. This means paying less, not zero.
You must apply for an exemption with your local council. They will check your circumstances and then confirm whether you are exempt.

Tip: If you believe your property meets one of the exemption rules but you still receive a council tax bill, contact your council and ask them to review your eligibility.
