How we calculate your annual energy consumption
Your annual energy consumption is an estimate of how much gas and electricity you’re likely to use over a year. It helps ensure your bills and payments are as accurate as possible.
1. Based on Your Meter Readings
We use the meter readings you submit (or that are sent automatically by a smart meter) to calculate how much energy you’ve used.
-
If you send regular readings, your usage is based on actual data.
-
If we don’t have recent readings, we may use estimated readings based on past patterns.
2. Considering Previous Usage
If you’ve been in your property for a while, we’ll look at your past 12 months of usage to predict how much energy you’ll likely use in the next year.
If you’ve recently moved in, we may use industry averages for a property of similar size and type until enough data is available.
3. Adjusting for Seasonal Changes
Energy use isn’t the same all year and you’ll generally use more gas in winter for heating and more electricity in summer for fans or air conditioning.
We take these seasonal variations into account when projecting your annual usage.
4. Using Supplier and Industry Data
Suppliers provide annual consumption estimates (known as EAC for electricity and AQ for gas).
These figures are used across the energy industry to calculate your expected usage and help set your payment plans.
5. Updating When Things Change
Your annual consumption figure can change if:
-
You submit new meter readings
-
You move into or out of a property
-
Your usage habits change (e.g., new appliances or heating settings)
When this happens, your account will automatically update to reflect the most accurate information.
🔢 Example Calculation
Let’s say you submitted two electricity meter readings:
-
January: 5,000 kWh
-
April: 5,600 kWh
That means you used 600 kWh in 3 months.
To estimate annual use, we multiply by 4 (since 12 months ÷ 3 months = 4):
600 kWh × 4 = 2,400 kWh per year (estimated annual consumption)
This helps your supplier and Homebox calculate your payments and predict future usage.
💡 Tip: Submitting regular meter readings helps keep your account accurate and prevents large adjustments at the end of the year.
