Why has my water bill changed?

Your water bill may change due to updated usage, meter readings, tariff changes, or annual price reviews by your local water supplier.

There are several common reasons why your water bill may have changed. Water suppliers in the UK review charges regularly, and bills can vary depending on your usage and local rate changes.

Here’s what could cause the change:

  1. Updated meter readings
If you’ve submitted a new water meter reading, your bill will adjust to match your actual usage. This can make your bill higher or lower depending on how much water you’ve used since the last reading.

  2. Annual tariff review
Most water suppliers review their prices every April. These updates are approved by the regulator, Ofwat, and may include small increases in line with inflation or investment in local water services.

  3. Estimated readings
If your supplier hasn’t received a recent meter reading, they may estimate your usage. This can sometimes make your bill appear higher or lower than expected.

  4. Seasonal usage changes
Water use often increases during warmer months — for example, from gardening or outdoor use — which can lead to higher bills if you’re on a metered supply.

Tip: Submit regular meter readings or upload your latest bill to your Homebox Dashboard to help keep your bills accurate.

Note: If you’re unsure about a change in your bill, you can contact your water supplier directly or check their website for tariff updates. You can find your supplier here: 👉 Find your water company (Water UK)
