When to take a meter reading

You should take a meter reading every month to make sure your bills stay accurate and up to date.

Why it’s important

Taking regular meter readings ensures your energy bills reflect your actual usage rather than an estimate.

Without readings, your supplier uses estimated figures that can make your bills higher or lower than they should be.

📘 Tip: Regular readings help you spot changes in your usage and can prevent unexpected bill adjustments later.

When to take a meter reading

We recommend taking your meter reading:

  • Once a month, ideally around the same date each month.

  • When you move in or out of a property.

  • Before your tariff changes or when you switch suppliers.

  • When Homebox requests one, for example, before setting up a new account or reviewing your energy usage.

How it helps your Homebox account

When you submit readings regularly, Homebox can:

  • Keep your payment plan accurate

  • Adjust for seasonal usage changes

  • Ensure any supplier bills match your true consumption

This means your account balance stays on track and avoids large catch-up bills later.

How to submit your reading

You can upload your readings in the Meter Readings section of your Homebox Dashboard. Simply enter the numbers exactly as shown on your meter (without decimals or red digits).
